Larry Gardner arrived at the PGA Tour Championship as a backup to a backup. By the end of the weekend, his voice was getting attention from ESPN, CBS, PGA players, corporate executives and legendary broadcaster Jim Nantz.
Gardner told Roland Martin that the opportunity came after the longtime announcer could not work the event and another replacement was also unavailable. The tournament saw Gardner’s reel, reached out directly, and gave him the shot.
Then the voice took over.
Gardner says players came over to tell him that his presence elevated the tournament and brought an energy they had not seen in a long time. Jim Nantz came down to meet him, praised his voice and later called him out by name on national television.
The moment carried extra weight because Gardner has spent years hearing no. He described applying for professional announcing jobs, making it to the final three in an Atlanta Braves public-address announcer search, working minor league baseball and college athletics, and repeatedly receiving notices that organizations had decided to go in another direction.
Instead of stopping, he kept building his reel and staying ready.
Gardner’s advice is direct: capture every opportunity, put your work on tape and treat every appearance like the person who can change your career is watching. His PGA breakthrough became proof of the lesson he repeated throughout the interview: “If you stay ready, you don't have to get ready.”
