6:42Now PlayingByron Donalds tried to dismiss David Jolly’s FAMU advocacy as fake political theater. Jolly fired back that Donalds was “unfit to lead,” Will Packer publicly backed Jolly, and Roland Martin mocked “little Byron” as the fight over FAMU funding and political credibility exploded.

David Jolly says Florida A&M University should not simply be celebrated as an HBCU. He says FAMU deserves to be treated as a flagship university of the state of Florida.
Jolly pointed to FAMU’s academic history, including a period when the university produced more National Merit Scholars than Harvard, and argued that a school with that record should not have to fight for equitable funding and professional-school resources. He also said the state withheld $2 billion in funding from FAMU.
Byron Donalds did not take kindly to Jolly’s message.
Donalds responded by highlighting his own ties to FAMU, including attending the university, serving in the FAMU caucus while in the state legislature and helping secure $25 million for the school’s Center for Access and Student Success. He then accused Jolly of showing up with a camera crew shortly before the election to talk to a small crowd and get B-roll, ending his post with one word: “Fake.”
Jolly fired back.
He told Donalds that he could have chosen unity and shared priorities around FAMU, but instead chose to attack and distract. Jolly then called Donalds “unfit to lead” and told him to “Do better.”
Filmmaker and FAMU graduate Will Packer also entered the fight, saying there was only one gubernatorial candidate committed to getting FAMU the resources it is owed and removing political backdoor gamesmanship from higher education in Florida: David Jolly.
Roland Martin mocked “little Byron,” while the discussion went even further, challenging Donalds’ use of his Black identity and FAMU history as political credentials while questioning what he is doing now as HBCUs and Black studies programs face attacks across the country.
