A Florida grand jury found that $10 million in taxpayer money was misappropriated after being diverted from a Medicaid settlement into the Hope Florida Foundation.
According to the grand jury report discussed on Roland Martin Unfiltered, the money was supposed to go toward health insurance for poor children. Instead, the report says the funds were routed through multiple organizations before ultimately landing in the bank accounts of two political action committees and the Republican Party of Florida. The money was then used in 2024 to help defeat Amendment 3, the citizen initiative to legalize marijuana in Florida.
State Rep. Felicia Robinson said the finding makes the lack of criminal charges difficult to understand. She noted that other elected officials have been sanctioned or imprisoned for less and stressed that these were taxpayer dollars intended for underserved poor children and their healthcare.
Roland Martin also pointed to the officials named in the report. The transcript says the grand jury concluded that Ashley Moody, who was attorney general at the time, was aware of plans to divert the $10 million to Hope Florida and authorized her former chief deputy to sign the settlement agreement. Testimony also identified James Uthmeier, then the governor’s chief of staff, as being involved in directing the money after it went to Hope Florida.
Robinson was blunt about the money and the people tied to it: “10 million of it you all pretty much you stole.” She later added, “It’s not a question about whether this money was stolen and you know who the players are.”
The central question remains: if the grand jury found that the money was misappropriated, why has nobody been charged?
