9:26Now PlayingDr. Fauci was asked a question during a recent press conference that he had to shoot down immediately. He was asked if Omicron is less more contagious but less dangerous than Delta should we just let Omicron run wild to build everyone's immunity. He said that was a dangerous strategy.

Sam: Let's talk about this with Anthony Fauci at the White House press conference. because this is a really interesting issue with omicron. there's no data yet. there's no data yet. The only thing that we know in terms of actual infection numbers in South Africa. I think you can. I think you can reliably assess at least from their infection numbers that the omicron is much more communicable. South Africa has really good tracing that's how they found it there in the first place. but the question then becomes and look all things being even slightly diminished if you have something that is 50 percent more transmissible and or transmittable. if you have something it is highly problematic because if it is equally as virulent or even slightly less virulent you would imagine you're going to see that many more hospitalizations and deaths. which of course is also very problematic because regardless of whether they're vaccinated or not this isn't you know we can have a so-called pandemic amongst the vaccinated. but the fact of the matter is we live in a society and aside from just it being inhumane, you know that saying that people deserve that from a practical standpoint from a society you may want to go to the hospital or may need to go to the hospital because your appendix burst or whatever it is. and if the hospital beds are filled up if medical personnel is exhausted it is a problem. and so here is a Fauci talking about what may end up being a silver lining to the omicron. We still don't know there's not enough but right now anyway and it's always a lagging indicator we're not seeing the uptick in hospitalizations and deaths in South Africa that you would start to see as a function of the fact that the infections have been doubling at an incredible rate. but here is Fauci.
Reporter: this proves more transmissible but less virulent than delta would there be any public health benefit to furthering its spread by lifting travel restrictions for example so out-compete the delta variant?
Fauci: you're talking about something really dangerous you're talking about letting a lot of people get infected to see if, in fact, you could protect them. That's something that I think almost all infectious disease people with any knowledge about the infectious disease would not say that's a good idea.
Sam: just to be clear on what the theory that she's espousing there is and why you gotta understand why this is dangerous from a public health policy standpoint why it's a dangerous theory to espouse. The theory is that omicron is significantly less virulent because again if you increase the number of people who are going to get infected by 50 percent and you don't dramatically decrease the virulence of this if you would like to do this in a lab let's say. you're going to get that many more deaths and hospitalizations even if it's slightly less virulent. it would have to be more than 50 percent less virulent to basically get you to a wash in terms of how many people end up in the hospital. But the argument or the theory that this reporter is sort of promoting is this idea that like well what if it takes over from delta and becomes the prominent strain could you actually like have essentially this variant destroy the danger associated with covid essentially?
