Oct 16, 201329:39Now PlayingU.S. Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA), Chairman of the Environment and Public Works (EPW) Committee, Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD), Chairman of the EPW Subcommittee on Water and Wildlife, and Senator Mazie Hirono (D-HI) were joined by a business owner, industry leaders and community representatives to discuss how the government shutdown is impacting local economies, families and communities nationwide. The speakers highlighted how the shutdown is delaying putting people to work repairing aging infrastructure in projects authorized in the Water Resources Development Act, as well as impeding the clean-up actions needed to protect families living near Superfund toxic waste sites, creating economic losses to local businesses that rely heavily on outdoor recreation, and stopping the creation of critically important worker safety protections at dangerous chemical facilities.
