The Christian Democrats (CDU) and their Bavarian sister party the Christian Social Union (CSU) took the most votes in the federal election, with Friedrich Merz most likely to be the next chancellor, though they fell short of an overall majority.
A pre-election pact means they cannot form a coalition with the far right, so third placed SPD is predicted to be the favourite choice, despite disagreements on key political issues.
