Victor Davis Hanson is raising serious questions about JD Vance’s political future — and whether Marco Rubio may ultimately become the stronger candidate to inherit Donald Trump’s Republican coalition.
In this reaction, I break down Hanson’s analysis of the emerging comparison between JD Vance and Marco Rubio as Republicans begin thinking about the future of the party.
Vance has enormous support inside the populist right and remains one of the most obvious potential successors to Trump.
But Hanson says something interesting is happening.
He describes hearing from Republican voters who are increasingly frustrated with Vance and becoming more interested in Rubio — including voters who believe Rubio appears more experienced, disciplined and prepared to win a national election.
Hanson contrasts Rubio’s approach with Vance’s increasing involvement in controversial political debates, social media battles and foreign-policy disputes.
Israel is a major part of that divide.
Hanson argues that some Republican voters have become uncomfortable with Vance’s rhetoric toward Israel and believes Vance should distance himself more clearly from antisemitic elements appearing on parts of the political right.
