Victor Davis Hanson has a warning for the United States:

America cannot automatically assume its European allies will show up when the next major conflict begins.

In this reaction, I break down Victor Davis Hanson’s argument about NATO, Europe, Iran and why the United States may need to rethink who it can actually rely on in a major regional war.

Hanson argues that NATO’s European members may defend Europe if Russia directly attacks the alliance — but outside of that scenario, Washington should not assume those same countries will participate in American military operations elsewhere.

And Iran is the perfect example.

According to Hanson, countries like France, Spain and other Western European nations are often unwilling to participate in confrontations that could expose them to retaliation, even while continuing to rely heavily on American military power when their own security is threatened.
