In this speech, I challenge the growing trend of criminalizing homelessness and call for something different: radical empathy.
Too often, homelessness is discussed as a problem to solve rather than a human experience affecting real people with inherent dignity and worth. We build policies that punish survival, stigmatize poverty, and push people further to the margins while ignoring the root causes that lead people to lose housing in the first place.
Drawing from my work with Love Beyond Walls, my research on homelessness and public policy, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s vision of the Beloved Community, I argue that people who are unhoused deserve housing, dignity, visibility, and belonging, not criminalization.
The question before us is simple:
If a person loses their housing, do they lose their humanity?
