8:37Now PlayingBeloved Vermont Ice Cream company, and subsidiary of the mega corporation Unilever, Ben and Jerry’s recently announced that they would no longer sell their ice cream in illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied west bank of Palestine and in East Jerusalem. In a statement the company issued alongside this announcement the company said “we believe it is inconsistent with our values for Ben & Jerry’s ice-cream to be sold in the Occupied Palestinian Territory”.
The company will continue to sell its ice cream all over Israel proper, this decision only has bearing on lands that are internationally considered to be illegally occupied (well, everywhere except Israel and the United States views these territories as illegitimate). Naftali Bennett, the current Prime Minister of Israel and the former leader of one such settler organizations, called the move “an immoral decision and I believe that it will turn out to be a business mistake, too.” A statement like this over ice cream feels a little half-baked? (drumsnare)
If these settlers would like Ben and Jerry’s, they need only hop in their cars and drive down Israeli-only roads through Palestinean territory and pop into Israel for a few groceries. Many Palestinians, on the other hand, couldn’t get their hands on a quart of Chunky Monkey if they tried. This move is mostly symbolic, and yet it’s significant that the far right in the U.S., and the Israeli government are freaking out about it. It will have almost zero material consequences for Israeli settlers, and doesn’t exactly improve the lives of Palestinians living under occupation. But it does send a message that boycotting is a form of legitimate protest against occupation, apartheid and the ongoing human rights violations.
