3:53Now PlayingHow do veterans feel about the withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan? The Bitchuation Room was joined this week by Esti Lamonaca, who shared their perspective on the 20 year war of a dead-end military occupation.
The war in Afghanistan was “officially” ended by President Obama in 2014, but as we’re all aware that was an end in name only, à la George W Bush’s “Mission Accomplished” banner. More than 7 years after Obama’s official end, and 20 years after the war began in 2001, American troops are finally being fully withdrawn.
This drawdown has also been accompanied by the rapid fall of town after town, city after city, and province after province. The Afghan government and military that the US poured over $800 billion dollars into is crumbling rapidly before our eyes, and the Taliban look destined to reassume the mantle of governing Afghanistan.

Esti Lamonaca is the National Lead Organizer with Common Defense and an Army combat veteran who served as an intel analyst within the United States Special Operations Command. Their last deployment was to Afghanistan with SF task forces from 2015-2016. They previously organized and managed LGBTQ+ events throughout the East Coast focusing on repealing the Transgender ban and the repeal of DOMA. Esti holds a degree in Anthropology with a minor in Community Organizing, and they have been featured in outlets such as NowThis, Huffington Post, and Inkstick Media.
