Will OnlyFans survive as a platform without its most famous type of content? By the end of 2020, OnlyFans had over 1 million creators and 90 million users. Will that last if there’s no more porn?
This past week, OnlyFans, a platform where you can directly support creators, most notably adult creators, notified its users that it will be banning sexually explicit content in the coming months. This is a huge blow to sex workers and others who use the platform to make their living.
Only a few years ago, Tumblr, another online platform, similarly restricted adult content on its website, and Tumblr saw its valuation drop from $3 Billion to $1 Billion. Billionaires and the stock market aside, this constant reshuffling of where sex workers are allowed to post and create content safely online is incredibly disruptive to their work, their lives, and their safety.
OnlyFans didn’t make this move because they’re losing money, but because their association with adult content makes them radioactive to credit card companies, who have instituted strict requirements for online platforms to vet the age of everyone on the site. While that sounds like a good idea in theory, in practice it leaves these websites majorly at risk if just one person successfully flouts their safety measures, making it an incredibly risky venture to host online adult content at all. It’s much safer for these companies to simply ban adult content all together than to live with a sword of damocles that could come crashing down at any moment.
