What lessons will the U.S. learn from the withdrawal from Afghanistan? If the media reaction tells us anything, it’s that future presidents can expect a full court press from the war mongering U.S. elite anytime it looks like a military industrial complex playground is about to close.
For our guest this week, Max Elbaum, who was alive for the American withdrawal from South Vietnam, it felt a little bit like deja vu. The short attention span, the lack of introspection, it’s all happening once again. The media class isn’t even talking about the U.S.’s long history in Afghanistan, going back before 2001 to the funding and arming of the mujahideen.
It would be wonderful if we could look back after 20 years of war and occupation and say “hey, maybe this kind of thing isn’t good for anyone,” but it doesn’t look like that revelation is coming. Even yesterday, after a bomb detonated and killed scores of civilians and a dozen or so American soldiers outside Kabul’s airport, Obama CIA director Leon Panetta is already on TV saying “We’re probably going to have to go back in.” Big sigh.
The Bitchuation Room is grateful to have been joined by Max Elbaum, a longstanding member of the fight against American imperialism. Max has been involved in anti-war, anti-racist and radical movements since joining Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) in Wisconsin in the 1960s. He was a founder of the War Times/Tiempo de Guerras bilingual tabloid project in the months after 9/11 and is currently an editor of Organizing Upgrade. He is the author of Revolution in the Air: Sixties Radicals Turn to Lenin, Mao and Che, re-released by Verso Books in 2018 with a new Foreword by Black Lives Matter co-founder Alicia Garza.
