For many it seems to have confirmed what most people already know to be true: Facebook is more interested in engagement than being a responsible platform, and Instagram purposely helps young women feel worse about themselves.
After a series of articles publishing internal Facebook research that proved many of the things we all kind of already know about Facebook by The Wall Street Journal, the whistleblower who collected those documents revealed their identity on 60 Minutes. Frances Haugen is a 37-year-old former Facebook product manager, who during their time at Facebook worked on “civic integrity” issues.
What Frances saw at the company shocked her, and she knew that anything she said personally could be spiked pretty easily by Facebook’s intense PR and lobbying machine, so she instead spent months secretly copying key internal research that disprove many of Facebook’s public pronouncements.
