In an effort to manufacture a crisis, even though there are plenty of actual crises going on to choose from (the climate crisis, to name only the most existentially calamitous), Republicans are trying to make the “border crisis” a thing again. If there is a crisis at the border, it’s one that the U.S. is directly perpetrating. The U.S.' “remain in Mexico” policy, which was created by Trump’s evil advisor Stephen Miller, has been maintained by the Biden administration, is one manifestation of it.
Adding injury to the violation of international human rights law, are the practices of the border patrol agents themselves. You might remember the images of C.B.P. on horseback literally whipping Haitian migrants, but those images are only the most visible forms of the violence that agents of the U.S. state inflict upon those coming to the United States in search of asylum.
Rep. Jamaal Bowman recounts his bizarre and unsettling trip to the border, the lack of Covid protocols among other injustices. Jamaal Bowman is a member of the House of Representatives, representing New York's 16th congressional district since 2021, when he defeated the 16 term Democratic incumbent, Eliot Engel. He is a former educator, and well known member of “The Squad.”
