In the wake of January 6th, the Biden administration has taken some steps towards combating far right extremists.
According to U.S. officials, the Homeland Security Department has begun a review of how it handles domestic extremism, and required that the department spend a portion of its federal grants on “combating it.” After years of minimal interest in monitoring right-wing extremists, from both the Obama and Trump administrations, suddenly the ranks of key committees are being staffed and resourced to combat this issue.
Having Homeland Security, or other agencies like the F.B.I, look into the infiltration of U.S. military and law enforcement by far right extremists is a little like asking the fox to guard the hen house. But hopefully this can become the priority that it needs to be in Washington. Historically, this is exactly the type of thing that gets used against leftist organizations in the U.S., so perhaps this will become a more dire space to watch in the years ahead.
