How do you remember Martin Luther King Jr.? What was the version of him that you learned in school, and has that view changed as you learned more about him? Today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day in the United States. In a country with painfully few federal holidays, it’s a time of rest and relaxation for those who don’t need to go to work, but it’s also a great time for some of the worst takes you’ve ever seen.
Dr. King was a radical. Whether for both racial justice or economic justice. He was an anti-imperialist, anti-capitalist, was pro-choice, and believed in militant non-violence. Dr. King wasn’t the patient civil rights leader that he is often portrayed as, instead he was insistent and unrelenting in his righteous voting right and economic justice crusade. While he is fondly remembered today, at the time of his death his approval rating was less than 25%, which is far worse than President Donald Trump’s approval rating ever was. Something to think about.
Both conservatives as well as liberal are guilty of remembering Dr. King as an acquiescent law-abiding organizer that he never was. He was a rabble-rouser, and got into all kinds of “good trouble” as the late civil right leader Rep. John Lewis would say. This Martin Luther King Jr. Day, let’s remember the King’s legacy by reaffirming and taking up the mantle of radical struggle.
