Will Democrats pass filibuster reform and deliver on any of President Biden’s campaign promises? The answer is, as always, no. To blame are a set of familiar characters: Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia and everyone’s favorite Manic Pixie Neoliberal from Arizona, Senator Kyrsten Sinema.
While Biden publicly called for filibuster reform this week, devoted agent of the status quo Sen. Sinema delivered an impassioned plea for keeping it untouched. Sinema claimed to be in favor of voting rights, however she disagrees strongly with the tactic of eliminating the filibuster in order to pass it. In reality, this is a distinction without a difference.
There’s no conceivable way to get 10 Republicans to vote for voting rights reform that would undercut their own illegitimate bases of power. Being against filibuster reform is no different from being against protecting and expanding voting rights. While anyone worried about the rapid descent into fascism comes to the slow realization that Senate Democrats aren’t interested in doing anything about it, Senator Sinema is “umm ackshually-ing” while Rome burns.
