Is this the beginning of asymmetric warfare between the United States and Russia? WNBA star Brittney Griner, the former first overall pick, is currently being detained in Russia, where she was playing for a Russian basketball team during the WNBA offseason, on suspicious drug charges.
According to Russian state authorities, Griner faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted. It’s unclear how much the war in Ukraine, and the subsequent economic warfare between Russia and NATO, had to do with this decision.
In the New York Times, Pamela Wheeler, a former head of the W.N.B.A. players’ union had this to say about Griner: “In terms of talent, she was absolutely a force and continues to be a force… I think that everyone was looking for her to help guide the league, which she did, into a new era.”
