Did you watch Biden’s first State of the Union address? We did, and honestly it was mostly unremarkable. Biden spoke at length about Russia’s war in Ukraine, without mentioning any other ongoing foreign policy, as well as his stalled domestic agenda.
One notable exception to the doldrums of this overly ceremonial speech was his explicit rejection of the activist demand of defunding the police, and instead restating his idea that the police need to be funded. Let's forget for a second that the budget of the New York Police Department alone is larger than Ukraine’s entire military budget (as it fights against the biggest land power in the world), and remember that exactly zero police departments were “defunded” during the pandemic or in the post-George Flyod era.
Biden, and Democrats, seem to believe that “defund the police” is an electoral slogan, and not a grassroots demand. Biden isn’t arguing against a focused grouped political action slogan developed by Third Way, he’s explicitly rejecting the solutions brought forth directly from impacted communities. Even if it’s terrible politics to say “defund the police,” no one was forcing Joe Biden to go out and reject it full sail.
