Following the attempted assassination of Donald Trump on Saturday in Pennsylvania, folks like Senator J.D. Vance and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene slung accusations that Democrats were somehow to blame for the (Republican) shooter. By asking fellow Democrats to tone down their rhetoric and “cool it down,” Biden is absolutely playing into their framing that somehow this is Democrats’ fault.
In a plea to Americans on Sunday, Biden asked his supporters to turn down the temperature on their words and actions against Donald Trump, describing them as “very heated” and calling for national unity. “We cannot, we must not go down this road in America,” said Biden. “We’ve traveled it before throughout our history. Violence has never been the answer.”
Obviously, not condoning violence is the right thing to say but it is understated how much Biden’s suggestion of mutual blame here is really dangerous. Perhaps it’s a little awkard to condemn political violence as he’s runs against a man whose entire brand is political violence.
