Ever since Joe Biden’s alarming debate performance, liberal pundits and a smattering of Democratic congresspeople have openly called for the President to not run again in November. Some who have publically supported Biden remaining have privately expressed doubts and the White House is now reportedly looking more seriously into the polling strengths of Vice President Kamala Harris.
But there’s one group of elected officials that has strangely thrown down with Joe Biden: progressives. From Senator Bernie Sanders to Squad members Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez and Rep. Ilhan Omar, they seem to be backing Biden harder than they ever have. Especially considering that he has gone back on his more progressive policy promises, drilling more oil than ever, cozying up to Netanyahu and bankrolling his war crime in Gaza, and little to nothing on voting rights.
One has to imagine that progressives have some sort of strategic game they’re playing: either one of reverse-psychology since they know if they called for Biden to step down it could turn into an ideological schism rather than an issue of electability, or they see a second-term Biden as the best way for them to get progressive policies over the finish line.
