20:09Now PlayingMr. Musk has done it again! Financially tanked his own platform instead of relinquishing one ounce of his own ego. This time, it has meant that the platform formerly known as Twitter has gone dark on the ENTIRE Brazilian market. A judge this week ruled that Elon Musk’s X was violating Brazilian laws on democracy by not banning SEVEN accounts that routinely spread misinformation, and forced the platform to shut down operations in the country. There was fair warning that this would happen but rather than complying, Elon decided to allow the ban to take effect since he loves to look like the victim.
Author Michael Fox who has lived in and written extensively about Brazil joins Francesca to explain why Brazilian free speech laws are not above all other laws, how Brazil actually holds politicians’ anti-democratic behavior accountable, and how Musk’s stubborn defense of online Bolsonaro lovers is part of a broader right-wing attack on democracy.
As Fox reminds us that Elon regularly bans users when asked by countries with far worse censorship laws like China or the UAE or Saudi Arabia. But because Musk has a big crush on former right-wing President Jair Bolsonaro and hates leftist President Lula Da Silva, he’s taking a different side.
