It translates in English as the “four no’s” and is a radical feminist movement in a country that is dominated by forces that are deeply patriarchal and deeply opposed to any feminist thought or critique.
The four no’s of this movement are:
no sex with men
no giving birth
no dating men
no marriage with men
This movement is primarily an online and anonymous one, as it is totally legal for employers to fire people who publicly express feminist thought (!) but you don’t need to be extremely online to begin to understand why this movement has come about.
Korea continues to strap women with restrictive and outdated roles around beauty and motherhood, without care for their economic equality. Add to that high-profile cases of femicide – the murder of women by a partner– and you get an angry and active feminist movement. All this has led to a rapidly declining birth rate in Korea, almost as rapidly as it has industrialized over the past few decades. Currently, the country has the lowest birthrate in the entire world.
