What Has Been Learned From a Year of Genocide?

On October 7th, politicians and pundits around the world gathered to mourn the lives lost during Hamas’s raid on Israel one year prior. But with very few hostages saved and over 40,000 Palestinian lives lost, for some, the mourning feels in tension with the larger genocide.

For many politicians, the destruction of Gaza and increasing regional war was just an afterthought in their monologues about the 'deadliest day for Jewish people since the Holocaust'. In their statements on the 10/7 anniversary, American politicians like Joe Biden repeated lies of sexual violence and baby killing by Hamas. As Biden says “Israelis and Palestinians alike deserve to live in security, dignity, and peace,” he does nothing to secure that reality for those on either side of the conflict.

Yes, this marks a year since the unforgivable violence against Israelis, but it also marks a year of a war on the Palestinian people at large. “We’re running out of soil to bury our dead,” wrote journalist Hossam Shabat at the end of September. As we watched tens of thousands of children die on our screens, we also can’t let their lives be in vain.
