In a statement following the election, Sanders wrote that “it should come as no great surprise that a Democratic Party which has abandoned working class people would find that the working class has abandoned them.” Sanders went on to name policies like raising the minimum wage and universal healthcare that poll incredibly well and materially benefit working people and shame the “Democratic leadership” who defend the status quo, and who, in his words, neglected to campaign on these issues and make their case to an angry American populace.
Pelosi fired back at the senator from Vermont, saying “I don't respect him saying that the Democratic Party has abandoned the working class,” and stating, as many have, that Biden’s policies helped the bottom 90 percent of the population. Though she may be right, there’s reason to believe that voters didn’t see that in their paychecks and in their everyday life.
In response to Pelosi’s comments, Sanders doubled down and said that the American people are justified in believing the economy isn’t so rosy for them. “We are living in an economy where the people on top are doing phenomenally well, while 60% of our people are living paycheck to paycheck,” said Sanders. “We need an agenda that says to the working class we’re going to take on these special interests and create an economy and a government that works for you.”
