In the wake of Kamala’s blowout loss to Donald Trump, pundits are trying to look beyond their media echo chambers and are thinking big about influence.
Right wing media dominates not only TV numbers but also new media such as podcast charts and platforms like Twitter and Facebook. And while it can’t be discounted the power that Zuck and Musk hold over what reaches our eyeballs, there’s also something to be said about the reach that individual creators have in shaping (especially young) minds. Joe Rogan has one of the most popular podcasts in the U.S., and the right wing media tried their darndest to say that Kamala “skipped” her appearance on Joe Rogan Experience. In fact, in her speedrun 100 day campaign, Harris chose not to take the time to fly to Austin to record in studio with Rogan, who refused to come with her.
Should Harris have dropped everything to appear on a podcast? Maybe… But regardless there’s lessons learned for Dems about the power of conservative media.
Republicans love to complain about how the media is controlled by Democrats, but when you look at the biggest shows in the country, they’re almost entirely Republican talking heads like Tucker Carlson, Joe Rogan, Charlie Kirk, etc. Democrats may have won the celebrity endorsement game but the more impactful right wing media sphere really flexed its muscle this November.
