While Democrats have continued to count on minorities to carry them to victory, Trump’s win shows that the left’s rainbow coalition may be falling apart. While some pundits are quick to say that marginalized group’s voting for Republicans shows the right has won over Latinos and non-white people with thoughts and logic—it’s more accurate to say that Democrats lost these voters.
According to Edison Research, there was a 13 point drop between those Latinos who voted for Harris versus Biden in 2020. With Harris branded as the border czar for the right, even those who have family south of the border know that the immigration system is not working. And by refusing to distance herself from Biden, Harris aligned herself with the status quo (which isn’t working).
Since Trump’s previous victory, Democrats have moved far to the right on immigration. Dems went from “no kids in cages” to “do not come.” It’s no wonder that those who faced the cruelty of the immigration system may feel unsavory about the party in power who have done nothing to change it. Democrats should learn not to take this community for granted.
