While much remains to be seen as the fallout from the 2024 election continues to grow, the reactions to the election have been disappointing. Liberals are almost gleefully pointing the finger at whoever they can blame: Palestinians, anti-genocide and apartheid activists, Latino Men, the list goes on. What there has been very little of, from the consultant class that runs the Democratic Party, is any reflection on how they might have failed, how their project willfully leaves the working class behind, and how they would much rather worry about their donors than their voters.
Fascism is a bipartisan project in the United States, and the genocide of Palestinians is a numbing example of this project. Whether blue or red, the meaningful differences between the parties are quite small. Questions of our material reality have been entirely purged from our politics, and the only thing that remain are culture war arguments over things that don’t impact a majority of the country. The biggest difference between the parties is rhetorical, a difference in how nice we should be while the continuing liberal project strips more and more people of their time, their dignity, and their sense of community. Trump is an acceleration of a process that has been underway since the neoliberal turn in the 1980s.
