In a series of tweets, Musk called the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) a “criminal organization” that needed to die. He didn’t wait long to make good on these threats either. Over the weekend, he had two top security officials from USAID forcibly removed when they tried to stop Musk and his DOGE cronies from entering restricted areas of the building. Once inside, they shut down the USAID website and sent out emails to the 10,000 employees of the organization saying to not come into work on Monday.
After an outpouring of anger from the public over Musk’s blatant power grab, Democrats finally took some action on Monday. Democratic lawmakers showed up at the USAID offices, demanding access to the building. When refused, they held a press conference in which the U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar said, “Shutting down USAID is a constitutional crisis” that is “endangering Americans around the world”.
All of this chaos and lives and livelihoods ruined just to cut what is less than 1% of the US budget?
