Francesca spoke with political strategist Anat Shenker-Osorio of the Words to Win By podcast about why that is a losing strategy, and how to actually win.
Despite Democrats’ insistence on running to the center, we all know this strategy hasn’t worked. You need no further evidence than the 19 million Democratic voters who decided to stay home in the 2024 election. The constant capitulation to the right on issues like immigration and trans-rights has only alienated the party’s base, paving the way for the Trump regime’s authoritarian take over. It feels like the Democratic establishment is addicted to losing the messaging battle.
The question then becomes; What is a winning message? Anat Shenker-Osorio puts it beautifully. She said, “The job of a good message isn’t to say what is popular. It’s to make popular what we need said,” Exactly! Democrats shouldn’t be running from the left to the center. They should be running towards the left, fighting for their base by pushing the progressive agenda we have been demanding for years! It has worked in places like Brazil and Poland, it can work here too.
