Is The Right’s Online Influence Overblown?

Is the left losing the online media space? Media Matters is reporting that right-wing content creators are dominating the online media landscape. But is that the whole story? Sam Seder of The Majority Report joined Francesca for a conversation about the state of the left in alternative media.

Media Matters released a study the other day called, “The right dominates the online media ecosystem, seeping into sports, comedy, and other supposedly nonpolitical spaces.” In this study, they determined that 9 out of the top 10 shows were deemed, “right-leaning.” It would certainly seem based on this data that the right has a solid hold over the political media landscape, but this isn’t really painting a full picture.

For one thing, not every show listed as being ‘right-leaning’ really conforms to this definition. Comedian Theo Von, for example, doesn’t neatly fit into this label. He has both left and right wing guests on his show, but mostly his guests are other comedians. Then there are the hundreds of other creators whose content falls into ‘nonpolitical spaces’ - like pop culture - that are definitely liberal coded. Not to mention that a lot of the right-wing political influencers have big money behind them. Tim Pool was literally being funded by a Russian oligarch!
