While they have been ramping up their attacks now, this battle against oppression is not a new one. Award winning artist, author, and trans activist Tourmaline joined Francesca to talk about her new book Marsha: The Joy and Defiance of Marsha P. Johnson, and the lessons for today.
Marsha P. Johnson was an American gay liberation activist and self-identified drag queen who lived in New York City during the 1960s. At this time, New York had what was known as the Three Articles Law, which required queer and trans people to wear at least three articles of, “male clothing.” The NYPD used laws like these to harass, arrest, and oppress the LGBTQ+ community. By the way, the law was still on the books up until 2020!
On June 28th, 1969, these oppressed communities had enough and Marsha was one of the first activists to spark what is now known as the Stonewall Uprising. The aftermath of this uprising gave us the first Gay Pride marches, the Gay Activists Alliance, along with numerous trans rights groups around the country.
We cannot let the likes of Trump undo the work Marsha P. Johnson and other LGBTQ+ Americans have fought and died for. Make no mistake: the battle for trans rights is the front line of the battle against fascism.
