Nick Hanauer, the first non-family investor in Amazon and one of the most influential venture capitalists in the world, says you cannot reach trillion-dollar valuations unless AI displaces millions of jobs. That is not a side effect. It is the business model.
In this debate, Hanauer and entrepreneur Daniel Priestley disagree on how bad the disruption will be and what to do about it. Hanauer argues that AI companies have effectively stolen humanity's intellectual property, monetized it for free, and concentrated the value in the hands of a few. He supports Bernie Sanders' proposal for the US government to own 50% of AI companies and recycle the profits into a sovereign wealth fund to cushion the disruption. He calls this "common sense," not socialism.
