1:58:49Now PlayingThe Supreme Court on Tuesday morning will consider a GOP challenge seeking to strike down federal restrictions on political parties’ spending in coordination with candidates.
The House and Senate campaign arms pushed back on limits under the First Amendment’s free speech protections. After a lower court ruled in favor of the Federal Election Commission, then-Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio) and former Rep. Steve Chabot (R-Ohio) appealed the decision to the nation’s top court.
“A political party exists to get its candidates elected. It is therefore only natural that a party would want to consult with its candidate before expressing support for his election,” the duo wrote in 2022 court filings.
Federal law currently allows donors to contribute more to a political party than an individual candidate.
Oral arguments are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. EST.
