Trump's FY2027 budget proposal is a $1.5 trillion military spending plan — a 44% increase, the sharpest single-year jump since World War II — funded by gutting programs that keep low-income Americans alive. LIHEAP, the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, is eliminated entirely. HIV and homeless assistance is cut by $529 million. Worker protection agencies lose $234 million. Rural USDA local projects lose $659 million. Public transit loses $449 million. IRS enforcement loses $1.4 billion — a direct gift to high-income tax evaders at the expense of working people who have no way to avoid what they owe.
The DOGE math makes it worse. Elon Musk claimed DOGE saved $150 billion across its entire existence. The single-month Iran war supplemental request to Congress is $200 billion. They did not save money. They wasted it, and are now wanting to take from the families that heat their homes on LIHEAP to give it to a war budget the American people never voted on and were never consulted about.
Marco Rubio said that governments choosing weapons over the welfare of their own citizens are failing those citizens. He was talking about Iran, but was really describing us.
