On April 2, 2026, President Trump signed an executive order under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act imposing tariffs of up to 100% on imported patented pharmaceuticals. The proclamation itself states that 53% of patented drugs distributed in the United States are produced abroad, meaning more than half of all brand-name medications could see their costs double overnight.
The tariff structure is tiered: companies that agree to move manufacturing to the U.S. can get a 20% rate. Companies that cut pricing deals directly with the Trump administration through TrumpRx.gov can potentially get zero tariffs. Companies that refuse to negotiate face the full 100%. Generic drugs are exempt — for now — but brand-name biologics, cancer treatments, and immunosuppressants are squarely in the crosshairs.
This isn't a plan to lower drug prices. It's an extraction scheme that puts the president in the position of personally deciding which companies get relief and which don't — while patients foot the bill. David Mitchell, founder of Patients for Affordable Drugs and a multiple myeloma patient himself, has been warning about exactly this kind of policy for months. The tariffs take effect July 31 for some companies and September 29 for others.
