On March 19th, 2004, Brianna Maitland left a note for her roommate that she was heading to work for her waitressing job at the Black Lantern Inn, and that she would be home late. She included the phone number for the Black Lantern in case her roommate, Jillian, needed to get in touch. That night, Jillian left town for the weekend to visit her sister in St. Albans. When she returned on the 22nd, she found Brianna’s note untouched in the same place, and no sign of Brianna. The next day, when Brianna still hadn’t come home, Jillian called the Maitlands to ask if they’d seen her, but they hadn’t seen their daughter either. Brianna's father Bruce called the Vermont State police to report both his daughter and her car missing, and they were told they'd be on the lookout. Thankfully, Bruce and Kellie weren’t willing to just sit around and wait for information to materialize. Instead, they drove down to the barracks, where a particular unnamed state trooper who I must assume looked extremely sheepish handed over a few pictures of a 1985 Oldsmobile 88 that he’d had towed on the afternoon of the 20th, and at that point it had been in a tow yard for five days. Brianna Maitland's car had been found backed into an abandoned farm house on the side of the road, not far from The Black Lantern, with the lights on, doors open, a squeezed lime, and no sign of Brianna Maitland anywhere.
