On August 1st, 1944, Charles Hale Bordwell disappeared while on a day trip with his wife and another couple, about twenty miles from their homes in Keewatin, Minnesota. The four of them had been picking blueberries in a patch near Cherry, along the West Two River. At some point during the trip he became separated from the rest of the group, and when he failed to appear by the time they were all ready to leave, the remaining members of the party began a search. According to certain sources, Bordwell would never be found, and to this day nobody knows what happened to the unfortunate local school administrator. Bordwell wouldn’t be the last person to disappear under mysterious circumstances in the region, either. Just thirteen years later, in 1957, Earl Somerville would vanish while hunting near Clayton Peterson Logging Camp, deep in the woodlands of Koochiching County. Six years after that, in 1963, the same fate would befall John Long when he went missing while on a hike along the Moose River while on his day off from the Tomaro Timber Company site near the Echo Trail northwest of Ely. While all three of those stories have strange twists, it was the last one which really caught my eye; because this isn’t the first time I’ve covered a disappearance near the Echo trail, and that previous story is one of the most bizarre we’ve ever looked into.
