Just six years ago, the Virginia legislature was Deep South and Deep Red - run by Republicans, mastered by men. Democrats were outgunned and there were only 24 women out of 140 state lawmakers. But the 'Old Boys Club' in Richmond was in for a shock.
Two Blue waves in 2017 and 2019 flipped the old order upside down, giving Democrats control of both houses in the state legislature. for the first time in two decades. In January 2020, for the first time in 401 years, a woman became Speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates. And Speaker Eileen Filler-Corn took the lead in getting the legislature to enact a bold package of voting reforms in this year's legislative session.
