But now, the state's power brokers have launched a scheme to gut the reforms and restore old-fashioned gerrymandering. It's a battle royal - The People vs The Politicians.
The drive for political reform in 2018 was led by Clean Missouri, a broad bipartisan coalition of former politicians, civic activists, and good government groups, angry at the blatant manipulation of elections by the GOP-led legislature. Even leading Republicans like former U.S. Senator Jack Danforth chastised the legislature for fueling partisan extremism and serving special interests.
In November 2018, 62% of Missouri voters agreed and passed the Clean Missouri reforms for transparent, non-partisan rules for election maps. But the old guard has now struck back. GOP supermajorities in the legislature have sent voters their own plan to roll back Clean Missouri reforms and put lawmakers back in charge of maps. So they headed for a showdown in the "Show Me State" next November.
