The Blue Lodge operates like a mystery play. The officers are the actors. The candidate is led passively through a ritual they do not yet understand - that passivity is deliberate, because comprehension comes later. After each degree, the candidate must work through a catechism - a formal series of questions and answers that walks them back through everything that occurred in the ritual, requiring them to demonstrate genuine understanding before they can progress.

The structure builds in three distinct stages. The Entered Apprentice degree comes first, then the Fellow Craft degree, then the Master Mason degree. Each functions as a play in three acts, typically with around seven officers plus the candidate - eight participants in total. And critically, each degree does not replace what came before. It accumulates. Every new layer of ritual and catechism adds to the foundation already laid, constructing a body of knowledge that can only be understood in full once all three degrees have been worked through completely.
