The prehistoric human story is, Randall argues, dramatically deeper, richer, and more complex than the conventional framework has been willing to acknowledge. The evidence pointing toward something significant happening in deep prehistory has accumulated to the point where it is becoming unavoidable and indisputable - too much simply does not fit within the accepted model for the anomalies to keep being explained away individually.

The continuum of cosmic threats Randall maps out uses two well known events as its endpoints. Tunguska - a low density object estimated at around one gram per cubic centimeter - sits at one end. Meteor Crater in Arizona, produced by a dense iron asteroid at approximately six to seven grams per cubic centimeter, sits at the other. Between those two endpoints lies the full range of objects the Earth could potentially encounter - varying enormously in density, size, and destructive potential. Randall’s point is that treating Tunguska and Meteor Crater as isolated events misses what they actually represent - not anomalies, but the boundaries of a continuum of ongoing cosmic interaction with this planet that the prehistoric record has been documenting all along.
