An Earthquake 675 Years Ago Finally Broke Open the Casing of the Great Pyramid.

The Great Pyramid was once sheathed entirely in highly polished white limestone - a casing so precisely fitted that for thousands of years nobody could penetrate it. The joinery between the casing stones was exquisitely tight. There was no gap large enough to insert anything that could be used as leverage. As a result, while erosion was actively working on the exposed surfaces at the base of the pyramid outside the casing, no erosion was occurring beneath it. That changed approximately 675 years ago when a major earthquake centered roughly beneath what is now Crete struck the region.
