5:13Now PlayingThis year marks 51 years since the birth of the modern movement to protect the environment called Earth Day, but some ask why Black and brown people should care. Dr. Mustafa Santiago Ali, who describes himself as an Environmental Justice Gladiator and Planet Protector, joined "DC Today" with Del Walters. When asked why Black and brown communities should care about the climate, Ali said," Because our communities are the ones hit first and worst by pollution and by the climate crisis that we find ourselves in." He said 100,000 people die prematurely from air pollution each year. He also said Black and brown children struggle from asthma and lead poisoning in their communities. When asked about wildlife and climate change, Ali said conservation issues that the original movement was built on are essential, but focus also needs to be dedicated to the environmental issues that everyday people face.
