8:23Now PlayingSocial media sites Facebook and Twitter are being criticized after three Black soccer players were subjected to racial abuse online.
Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka are part of England’s national team and were playing against Italy in the Euro 2020 game held in Wimbley stadium in London. The players missed penalty kicks in the game and the team lost to Italy. Twitter shutdown one thousand accounts for abusive messages towards the players.
United Kingdom Prime Minister Boris Johnson tweeted out, “This England team deserves to be lauded as heroes, not racially abused on social media. Those responsible for this appalling abuse should be ashamed of themselves.”
The English Football Association condemned the attacks and placed all of their support behind the players affected by the abuse.
