The 6888th Central Post Directory Battalion was the only all-Black female battalion serving in Europe during World War II. Originally, there were about 855 members in the battalion, and only 7 remain alive today.
This unit was important part of World War II. They had to sort all of the mail that was backlogged in airplane hangers. Their motto was “No Mail, Low Morale.” They had to get all the mail issued out to the soldiers fighting in the war and let these soldiers hear from their families through care packages.
