5:42Now PlayingThe national average age for menopause is 51, however Black women can experience it two years prior to the average.
Mental health and wellness expert Jane Marks dropped in on “Start Your Day” to discuss Black women’s experiences with menopause. According to Marks, Black women often experience menopause longer than the larger population. Black women can experience menopause symptoms for 10 years, while Asian women experience them for 8 years and white women have symptoms for 6.5 years.
This puts Black women at a greater risk for breast cancer, ovarian cancer and osteoporosis. Depression is often a symptom of menopause, but Marks says that once they address this symptom with medication, exercise and lifestyle change, then you will see a change at home.
All this and more on “Start Your Day.”
