Will President Biden Extend Deadline to Withdraw US Troops from Afghanistan?

DC correspondent Bofta Yimam shared with Sharon Reed on “Start Your Day” that leaders of seven allied nations will likely pressure President Joe Biden to help more vulnerable refugees escape Afghanistan.

While the White House has made clear that the country’s commitment to at-risk Afghans does not end on August 31, the Taliban says no extension has been sought nor will one be granted. Challenges hindering the evacuations include reaching the airport, terrorist attacks and complicated processing times. “I think it’s irresponsible to say Americans are stranded; they are not. We are committed to bring Americans who want to come home, home,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki said in a clip aired on “Start Your Day.” “We are in touch with them via phone, via text, via email, via any way that we can possibly reach Americans to get them home if they want to return home.” National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan added that they are in talks with the Taliban on a daily basis and are consulting closely with allies and partners on the issue of evacuations and its progress. Yimam said the possible coordination of any sanctions that may be imposed on Taliban leaders and a resettlement plan for Afghan refugees may also be discussed at the meeting.
