3:27Now PlayingEntertainer and civil rights activist Josephine Baker will be honored with induction into the French Panthéon Mausoleum on Nov. 30.
In 1925, she fled to France attempting to escape racism and segregation in America and rose to fame headlining theaters in Paris. Baker used her platform to become a key figure in the French resistance against Nazi Germany, as she would pass along information about the movement of German troops on her sheet music.
She returned to the U.S. to join the Black resistance against inequality and refused to perform in front of segregated audiences. Baker took part in the March on Washington in 1963 and was the only woman to officially speak during the demonstration.
